How Do Planets Stay in Orbit?

Imagine you're on a swing. When you push off, you go higher and higher, but if you stop pushing, you'll eventually come back down. Planets are like that swing: they’re pulled by the sun’s gravity, but they also move forward in space. This balance is what keeps them going around the sun without crashing or escaping.

Examples

  1. A ball tied to a string is swung around, if the string breaks, it flies off straight instead of continuing in a circle.
  2. If you throw a rock into the air, gravity pulls it back down.
  3. Your dog running in circles keeps going because they keep moving forward.
