Why Do We Prefer Suffering to Boredom?

What is Boredom?

Imagine you are sitting in a completely white room with no sounds and nothing to do. It feels weirdly uncomfortable, doesn't it? You might even choose to get a little pinch or feel hungry just to prove you are real.

Why We Hate Empty Spaces

Our brains are like busy factories. When there is nothing happening, the factory starts making its own noise. This empty feeling is called boredom. It feels worse than mild pain because it makes us question if we matter.

Choosing Pain

Think about watching a sad movie or eating spicy food. The sadness or the heat hurts, but you enjoy it. Why? Because these feelings tell your brain that something important is happening. We prefer negative experiences (like effort or sadness) to zero experience. Zero feels like disappearing.

The Lesson

We are not just trying to be happy. We are trying to feel alive. A little struggle proves we exist.
