Why we need darkness to survive | Diane Knutson | TEDxRapidCity?

We need darkness to help our bodies rest and grow strong, just like how a nap helps you after playing all day.

Imagine your body is like a little robot that needs to recharge its batteries every night. When it's dark, your brain sends out a special message that says, “It’s time to sleep!” This message tells your body it’s time to relax and fix itself so you can play again the next day.

How Darkness Helps You Sleep

During the day, you’re running around, climbing trees, and chasing friends. Your brain gets all excited with something called light, which is like a loud alarm clock telling your body, “Wake up!” But when it gets dark outside, that alarm clock turns off, and your brain says, “Time for bed!”

Without enough darkness, your body might not get the full rest it needs. Think of it like trying to read a book in a bright room, you can’t see the words clearly. Your brain needs the quiet and calm of darkness to do its job well.

So next time the sun goes down, give yourself a big smile, your body is saying thank you!
