Why Do We Count in Tens?

We count in tens because we have ten fingers! When you were little, you probably used your hands to count, one finger for each number. So it makes sense that we use a system with ten numbers: 0 through 9. If humans had eight fingers or twelve fingers, we might count using eights or twelves instead!
