What is Vote Jumping? Imagine you are at a big ice cream party. You like chocolate best, but vanilla is okay too. If everyone else picks chocolate and it runs out, your vanilla ticket still counts! That is *vote jumping*.
How It Works In some elections, you do not just pick one person. You number them: 1 for your top choice, 2 for your second favorite, and so on. When the counting happens, if your first choice wins by a lot or loses completely, your vote does not disappear. It 'jumps' to your next favorite who is still in the race.
Why It Matters This helps find a candidate everyone can agree on, even if they are not everyone's absolute number one pick.
Examples
- Your favorite singer loses the contest, so your ticket goes to the runner-up.
- A pizza topping you like runs out, so you add extra cheese instead.
- Choosing a movie when the first option is already booked for tonight.
