Venus is hotter than Mercury because it has a thick blanket that traps heat, like how a blanket keeps you warm at night.

Imagine Venus and Mercury are two kids wearing different types of clothes on a hot summer day. Mercury is wearing just a thin shirt, he lets the heat pass through easily. But Venus is wearing a heavy, fluffy coat, it doesn’t let the heat escape, so she gets super warm.

Venus has a lot of carbon dioxide in its air, like having a bunch of tiny balloons that hold on to the heat. This makes Venus's atmosphere act like a thick blanket, trapping all the warmth from the Sun.

Mercury is closer to the Sun than Venus, so it gets more sunlight at first. But because it doesn’t have that thick blanket, the heat just slips away into space, kind of like how you feel cool when you take off your coat after playing outside.

So even though Mercury starts with more sunlight, Venus keeps it all in, and that’s why Venus is hotter!
