Why the Chicken Got Domesticated | Sam O'Nella | A History Teacher Reacts?

The chicken became our friend because people wanted more chickens to hang out with them.

Long ago, wild chickens lived in forests and did their own thing. They didn’t have farms or people to feed them, they had to find food on their own. But then humans came along, and they noticed that some chickens were easier to catch and ate better than others.

So people started keeping the friendliest and fattiest chickens around. These chickens got more food and didn’t have to run from predators as much. Over time, they grew bigger and tamer, like how your pet dog gets used to you giving it treats every day.

This is domestication, when wild animals become friends with people because we take care of them and give them good stuff.

How It Works Like a Playground

Imagine the chickens were playing on a jungle gym, and humans came in with snacks. The chickens who liked snacks the most stayed around to play with the humans. The others went back to the forest. That’s kind of how it worked, except instead of snacks, they got food and safety.

And just like that, chickens became our friends, and we’ve been raising them ever since!
