Why Does Spicy Food Taste Like Heat?

You know how hot soup feels warm? Spicy food does something similar but without any actual heat. This happens because of a special chemical in chili peppers called capsaicin. It tricks your tongue into thinking it is getting burned.

The Trick

Your body has tiny sensors on your tongue that detect temperature. When you eat something hot, like coffee, these sensors send a signal to your brain saying 'it is warm!'. Capsaicin fits perfectly into these sensors like a key in a lock. It pushes the sensor open even when the food is cold.

Why You Sweat

Because your brain thinks your mouth is on fire, it tries to cool you down. This makes you blush and sweat, just like when you run a fever or exercise hard. So, a cold jalapeno pepper can make you feel hotter than ice cream!
