Why Is Yawning Contagious?

Yawning is contagious because it’s like when you see someone else do something exciting and you want to join them.

When you yawn, your mouth opens wide, and you take a deep breath, just like when you're really tired or really sleepy. Sometimes, if you’re around people who are yawning too, you might feel the urge to yawn as well. It's kind of like when you're playing with friends, and one person starts laughing, and soon everyone is laughing together.

How Yawning Spreads

Your brain sees someone else yawn, and it thinks, "Oh, they’re tired, maybe I should be too!" So it sends a message to your mouth and lungs, telling them to open up and take a deep breath. That’s when you yawn!

Sometimes, the more people around you yawn, the more likely you are to yawn too. It's like when everyone in class starts clapping, and you feel like you should join in too, even if you weren’t clapping before.

It’s not magic, it’s just your brain trying to match what other brains are doing!
