Why is the wick too short to reach the flame?

The wick is too short to reach the flame because it can't stretch or grow like we do when we reach for something high up.

Imagine you're trying to grab a cookie from the top shelf, but your arms are just too short. You have to stand on tiptoe or get a chair to help you out. The wick is like you, it's trying to get close to the flame, which is like that cookie. But if the wick isn’t long enough, it can't touch the flame.

Why the wick needs to be long

The flame is usually at the top of a candle, and the wick has to go all the way up there so it can catch fire and burn. If the wick is too short, it's like having only half your arms, you just can’t reach that cookie!

Sometimes people make the wick longer by adding more string or using a special kind of wick made for taller flames. That way, the flame gets enough fuel to stay bright and warm.

So next time you light a candle, think about how the wick is working hard to get close to the flame, just like you work hard to reach that cookie!

  2. Imagine trying to light a fire with just a tiny piece of string, it won’t get very hot.
  3. Sometimes, even if you light the wick, it might go out quickly because it’s too short.
