The Very Hungry Caterpillar is so dang hungry because it needs to eat a lot to grow up and become a butterfly.

Imagine you’re eating cookies all day, one after another, two at once. That’s kind of what the caterpillar does! It eats fruit, apples, pears, and even cherry pie. Every time it eats, it gets bigger, like when you eat a big meal and your stomach feels full.

When the caterpillar is little, it needs to be big enough to turn into a butterfly. Butterflies have wings, and those wings need space to grow, just like how you need room in your backpack for all your toys.

After eating so much, the caterpillar makes a cocoon around itself. Inside that cocoon, it changes from a wormy little bug into a beautiful butterfly, kind of like when you put on a costume and become someone new.
