Imagine light is like a tiny runner trying to cross a room.

Why Stone Blocks the Way
In stone, the atoms are packed tightly together, like a crowd of people in a busy subway car. There are no gaps for the light to pass through. When light hits stone, it bounces off or gets absorbed by the atoms. It cannot get through.
Think of a brick wall. You cannot see through it because the material is too dense. Glass is just a special type of rock that cooled down quickly, so its atoms never got a chance to lock into a tight, crowded pattern. This loose packing creates the clear paths for light.
