Imagine your birthday keeps shifting. Long ago, people used a calendar made by Julius Caesar called the Julian Calendar. It was almost perfect, but it added a tiny bit too much time every year. Over thousands of years, this extra time piled up like snow. By 1582, the calendar had drifted so far that spring started in April instead of March! The Pope fixed this by removing ten days from October. Countries later switched to the new Gregorian Calendar at different times. This is why you see two dates for old events. If a country changed late, like Britain in 1752, their history books show dates like September 2nd followed immediately by September 14th. The gap between these systems is called Old Style and New Style. It explains why George Washington's birthday seems to jump around! We still use the new calendar today, but old documents can be tricky.
Examples
- George Washington was born on October 2 in his time but November 11 today.
- In 1752, September had only 19 days because ten were skipped.
- Some churches celebrate holidays on different days due to the old calendar.
