Why some shops leave
Shops inside malls used to be very happy because lots of people came to visit the mall, and they all went into different shops. But sometimes, not as many people come to the mall anymore, maybe they go shopping online instead of walking around with their parents.
When that happens, some shops feel lonely and decide to leave the mall. It's like when a kid moves out of a big playground because there are fewer friends to play with.
What happens next
If not enough shops stay in the mall, then the mall itself might also need to close down, it’s like when all the kids leave the playground, and it becomes empty and quiet.
Sometimes, new stores come in to take the place of old ones. It's like making room for new friends at the playground. But if not enough people are there to enjoy them, even the new shops might feel lonely too.
Examples
- A popular clothing store in a mall closes because fewer people are visiting the mall to shop.
- Kids stop buying toys from a toy store in the mall since they now get them online.
