Why Does Water Expand When Frozen?

Imagine you have a box of Lego bricks. When you pile them up, they fit together tightly. But if you connect them into a specific open pattern with big gaps, the same number of bricks takes up more space. Water is like those Legos.

The Tiny Molecules

Water is made of tiny H2O molecules. Usually, when things get cold, the molecules slow down and pack closer together. This makes the substance shrink and become denser. Water is special because of the way its molecules hold hands.

The Hand-Holding Game

Each water molecule has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. These parts act like little magnets. As water cools, the molecules start holding hands more firmly. They lock into a rigid, open shape called a crystal lattice.

Why It Matters

Because this shape has lots of empty space, ice takes up about 9% more room than liquid water. That is why ice cubes float in your drink. If water behaved like most things, ice would sink to the bottom of lakes. Fish would freeze solid in winter. The expansion keeps the surface frozen while life survives below.
