Why Does Time Appear to Move in One Direction?

Time feels like a one-way street because of something called the arrow of time, which is really just a fancy name for things getting messier. Think about your bedroom. If you build a giant house of cards, it takes careful effort. But if you sneeze, poof! The cards fall down into a messy pile. You will never see the scattered cards suddenly jump up and rebuild the house by themselves. This happens because nature prefers disorder. In science, we call this entropy.

The Melting Ice Cube

Imagine holding an ice cube in your warm hand. It melts into water. That is easy. But have you ever seen a puddle of water suddenly freeze back into a perfect ice cube in your hand? No, because heat flows from warm things to cool things, not the other way around.

This rule, called the Second Law of Thermodynamics, says that in our universe, things naturally move from neat and organized to mixed up and random. You can break an egg, but you cannot un-break it. The yolk spreads out and mixes with the white, creating more entropy.

Think of entropy like spilling milk on the floor: it spreads out and never gathers itself back into the carton.
