Why Does Rain Smell Like Earth?

Have you ever noticed that special smell right after it rains on a hot day? That scent comes from something hidden in the dirt. When the ground is dry, plants release oils and tiny bacteria let out spores. These sit quietly in the soil until raindrops fall.

The falling rain acts like little splashing hammers. They hit the dirt so hard that they splash those oils and spores into the air as tiny droplets of mist. This mist carries the smell up to your nose. Scientists call this smell petrichor, which is a fancy word for 'the stone's moisture.'

There are also other smells mixed in. Lightning can create ozone in the sky, which smells sharp and clean like a refrigerator. But mostly, petrichor is the scent of the earth waking up after being thirsty.
