Why Does Infinity Come in Different Sizes?

Imagine you have a bag of infinite marbles, and another bag with infinite jellybeans. At first glance, they both seem the same, but one set is actually bigger than the other! This happens because infinity doesn't always behave like regular numbers.

Infinity might feel endless, but there are different kinds: some infinities can be counted (like 1, 2, 3...), and others can’t. When you match up numbers from both sides, like pairing every jellybean with a marble, if one set runs out first, that means it's smaller.

Examples

  1. You have an infinite number of cookies, but you also have an infinite number of friends. If each friend gets one cookie, there are still enough for everyone, but if they're all infinite, infinity might be the same size.
  2. Countable infinity is like counting your toes, you can match them up with numbers: 1, 2, 3... and never run out.
  3. Different sizes of infinity mean that even though both are endless, one set might have more elements than the other, just like having infinite jellybeans but only a few cookies.
