Why does everyone have a voice?

Everyone has a voice because everyone has a special tool inside their body called a larynx, and it works like a tiny musical instrument.

Imagine you have a toy that makes noise when you blow into it, like a flute or a kazoo. That’s kind of how your larynx works. Inside your throat, there are little muscles and strings called vocal cords. When you speak or sing, air from your lungs goes up through your windpipe and hits these vocal cords.

• If the air hits them just right, they vibrate like a reed in a flute.
• These vibrations make sound, that’s your voice!

Just like every toy has its own unique sound, every person's vocal cords are slightly different. That’s why you have a different voice than your brother or sister, and even from yourself when you're happy, sad, or tired.

So, everyone has a voice because they each have their own special musical instrument inside them, the larynx, with its vibrating vocal cords!
