We yawn when we're bored or tired because our body is trying to wake us up or stay awake.
Imagine you’re sitting in a long car ride, and everything around you is quiet. You feel sleepy, but your brain wants to stay alert. So it sends out a message: “Hey, let’s bring more air into the lungs, stretch those big muscles, and get some fresh oxygen!” That's when you yawn, a big, loud breath that makes your mouth wide open and your eyes sleepy.
Why does this help?
Yawning helps our body change how we feel. When we take a deep breath during a yawn, it sends more oxygen to the brain and stretches the muscles in the face and throat, kind of like stretching after sitting still for too long. This makes us feel more awake or less tired.
Sometimes, when people are bored, they also yawn because they copy others. Just like when you laugh with your friends, yawning can be contagious, a fun game that passes from one person to the next!
