Why Do We Sweat When Eating Spicy Food?

When you eat something spicy like a chili pepper, your mouth feels hot even if the food is cold. This happens because of a special protein called TRPV1 in your tongue that acts like a heat detector.

The Heat Trick

Chili peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin. Capaicin fits into those heat detectors like a key in a lock. It tells your brain 'I am hot!' just like touching a stove.

Cooling Down

Your brain hears the alarm and says, 'Okay, let's cool off.' It sends signals to your sweat glands to start working. You might get sweaty on your face or forehead even if it is not actually hot outside.

It is like wearing a winter coat in summer but feeling fine because you are being careful. Your body thinks the chili is making you burn, so it opens windows (sweat) to let out the heat.
