Why do we see lightning before thunder? | #aumsum #kids #science #education #children?

We see lightning before thunder because light travels faster than sound.

Why light is quicker

Imagine you're playing a game with your friend. You have to run from one end of the room to the other, while your friend just has to shout from where they are. Even though your friend starts at the same time as you, you get there first, because you’re running faster than their voice can travel.

Lightning is like you, zipping through the sky super fast. Thunder is like your friend’s shout, which takes longer to reach us because sound moves more slowly.

How it works in a storm

When lightning strikes, it happens up high in the clouds. The light from the lightning reaches our eyes almost instantly, that's why we see it right away. But the sound of thunder has to travel all the way down from the sky to our ears, and it takes longer for it to get here. That’s why we hear thunder a little bit after we see the lightning.

So next time you’re watching a storm, remember: light is like a race car, and sound is like a turtle, that's why lightning comes first! 🌩️🔊
