Why the Bullet?
Back in ancient times, when doctors did surgeries without anesthesia (a way to make you sleepy or numb), soldiers had to bite on a bullet to help them deal with the pain. The hard metal of the bullet helped push the pain away from their mind for a while.
So, today, if someone says ‘I’m going to bite the bullet,’ it means they’re ready to face something tough and brave.
Examples
- When you have to eat something really sour for your lunch, you can say ‘I’m going to bite the bullet.’
- Your mom might tell you, ‘You need to bite the bullet and clean your room now!’
