How Counting Works Like a Game
Imagine you're playing with blocks. You put one block in your hand, then another, until all 5 of your fingers are full. That’s 5 blocks. Then you go to the other hand and do the same thing again, that's 10 blocks total! People used this way of counting like it was a special kind of game.
Why 10 Is Special
Now think about when you count on your fingers, but you're not just using one hand. You use both, like when you’re trying to figure out how many cookies are left in the jar. That’s 2 hands, and each has 5 fingers, so that makes 10!
It's like having two pockets with 5 candies in each pocket, and if you pour them all into one big bag, it becomes 10 candies! People liked counting this way because it was easy to remember, and it helped them keep track of things. That’s why we still have 10 fingers and 10 toes, they help us count like a special game that goes on forever!
