Hiccups happen when we eat too fast because our tummy gets full and sends a message to our brain. Imagine you're drinking water really quickly, your tummy feels like it's being squeezed, and that makes your diaphragm (the muscle you use to breathe) go into a little dance. That dance is what causes the hiccup sound!
Examples
- Eating a big sandwich in one bite, crunch, and suddenly you're hiccuping like a robot.
- Drinking soda too fast makes your tummy feel like it's popping out, causing hiccups.
- A child finishes their meal quickly and starts hiccuping while laughing.
