Why Do We Get ‘Brain Freeze’ from Ice Cream?

We get brain freeze from ice cream because it surprises our head with a sudden chill.

Imagine your mouth is like a cozy room on a warm day, comfortable and happy. Now, you take a big bite of ice cream, which is super cold. That cold runs all the way up your nose to the front part of your brain, kind of like a snowball rolling into your head! Your brain says, “Whoa! That’s unexpected!” and sends out quick signals that make you feel a sharp pain, brain freeze!

Your mouth and throat are lined with nerves. When something super cold touches them, those nerves get excited and send messages to your brain really fast.

The front of your brain is near your nose. So when you eat ice cream, that chill zips up your nose like a quick message on a slide. Your brain thinks it's getting a cold surprise, so it reacts by giving you a brain freeze, just like when you get a little shock from touching something icy or wet!
