Why do we forget things and how does memory actually work?

We remember things because we put them in our brain’s storage room, but sometimes they get bumped out or covered up.

Imagine your brain is like a toy box. Every time you learn something new, it's like getting a new toy and putting it in the box. When you want to remember that toy, you look for it in the box. But if there are too many toys, or if you don’t use some of them often, they can get lost under other toys.

Memory works a lot like that. Your brain has different storage rooms, one for things you learn quickly and forget soon, and another for things you remember for a long time.

How forgetting happens

Sometimes the toy you're looking for is moved or covered by other toys. That’s like when you learn something new and it pushes an old memory out of your mind. Or maybe you just don’t use that toy anymore, so it gets forgotten.

If you want to remember more things, try using them often, it's like keeping your favorite toys in a special place where they’re easy to find!
