We forget common things, like where we put our keys, because our brain is like a busy toy box that sometimes loses track of where everything goes.
Imagine your room is full of toys, your favorite dinosaur, your teddy bear, and your shiny red ball. When you're playing, you just toss your toys around without thinking about where they go. Sometimes you put the ball on the bed, or the teddy bear under the chair. Later, when you want to find the ball, it's like looking for a toy in a messy room, you might not remember where you left it.
Your brain works the same way. When you're rushing out the door in the morning, you just grab your keys and put them somewhere, maybe on the table, or on the couch. But because you’re busy, your brain doesn’t remember where they went, it’s like a toy that got lost in the toy box.
Sometimes, even if you remember putting your keys down, your brain might think they're still with you, just like when you think your teddy bear is with you, but it's actually on the floor!
Examples
- Losing your keys after a busy morning because your brain is too tired to remember where you put them.
- Forgetting to bring your phone on the way out the door, even though it was right next to you all along.
- Trying to find your wallet in a bag full of other items because you didn't pay attention when you put it in.
