We celebrate different New Years around the world because people have different ways of counting time, like how some kids count their toys and others count their cookies.
Why Do People Have Different Ways?
Imagine you and your friend both get a bag of candy on the same day. But you decide to eat one piece every night, while your friend eats two pieces each night. Even though you started at the same time, you'll finish your candy on different days, just like how some places start their New Year on January 1st and others might use a different date or even a different calendar.
How Calendars Work Like Different Clocks
Some people use a calendar that looks like a clock with 12 hours, they call it the lunar calendar, and it changes based on the moon. Others use a calendar that’s more like a big hourglass, counting days exactly like you count seconds when you wait for your favorite show to start.
So just like some kids like to count their toys and others love counting cookies, people all over the world have fun ways of saying “Let’s start fresh!”, and that’s why we celebrate different New Years.
