Why do we blush when we feel embarrassed?

We blush when we feel embarrassed because our body sends a message to our face that makes it turn red.

What happens inside our skin

When you feel shy or embarrassed, your brain gives a signal to a special part of your body called the heart, not just your heart beats faster, but something else happens too! It tells your blood vessels in your face to open up like little windows. This lets more blood rush to your face, and since blood is red, it makes your skin look red, that’s your blush!

How it's like getting a hot drink

Imagine you’re holding a warm cup of cocoa on a cold day. The heat from the cocoa makes your hands feel cozy and maybe even a little red. Blushing is kind of like that, instead of warm cocoa, your body sends warm blood to your face when you're feeling embarrassed.

Sometimes people blush so much they look like they’ve had a big red drink all over their face! But it’s just your body saying, “Hey, I noticed that!” in the friendliest way.
