A volcano erupts when pressure builds up and suddenly escapes, just like when you shake a bottle of soda and it explodes all over the place.
Imagine your volcano is like a big bottle full of fizzy drink, the lava inside. Deep underground, there’s molten rock, which is super hot and moves around. This molten rock is like the bubbles in the soda, they're trapped by rock layers, acting as a lid on the bottle.
What Happens When It Builds Up
Over time, more and more pressure builds up inside the volcano, just like when you keep shaking that soda bottle. The pressure gets so strong that eventually, it pops, like the cap flying off the bottle!
That’s when the eruption happens: hot lava, gas, and ash all shoot out of the top of the volcano, making a big mess, just like soda exploding everywhere!
Why It's So Violent
Sometimes, there are gas bubbles inside the molten rock that can make things even more exciting. These bubbles grow bigger as they rise, and when they pop, they help push everything out faster, like when you open a bottle of soda really quickly and it sprays all over!
Examples
