Why do some plants change color in the autumn?

Some plants change color in the autumn because they start wearing different clothes as the weather gets cooler.

Imagine you're wearing a blue shirt all summer long, it’s bright and happy. But when winter comes, you switch to a red or yellow sweater. That's kind of what happens to leaves!

In summer, plants use a special tool called chlorophyll to make food from sunlight. This tool is green, so that's why most leaves look green all summer.

But when autumn comes, the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler. The plant knows it’s time to stop making food for now, like putting away your toys before going to bed.

As the tool called chlorophyll starts to go to sleep, other colors that were hiding underneath come out to play. These are reds, yellows, and oranges, like the inside of a candy bar!

So, the leaves change color because they're saying goodbye to summer and getting ready for winter, just like you switch clothes when the weather changes!
