Some people have ‘kinks’ in their hair because of the shape of the tiny pockets in their skin called hair follicles. If a follicle is round, the hair that grows out of it tends to be straight. But if the follicle is oval or stretched out, kind of like an egg, then the hair comes out curled or kinked, making waves and curls happen naturally.
Examples
- A child with curly hair has oval-shaped follicles that twist the hair as it grows.
- If your mom has straight hair but your dad has wavy hair, you might have kinks because of a mix of genes.
