Why Do Some People Hate Being Touched?

Some people feel uncomfortable when someone touches them because it surprises their body and mind.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, and suddenly someone grabs it from you, that can be a little shocking! That's kind of what happens when someone touches you without warning. Your brain goes “Wait, what’s happening?!” and sends a message to your body saying “Be ready for anything!”, which makes you feel tense or even a bit scared.

Like Getting a Surprise Hug

Sometimes people touch others because they’re being friendly, like giving a hug or a pat on the back. But if someone doesn’t warn you before doing that, it can feel like getting a surprise hug when you're not ready for it. That’s why some kids prefer to give and receive touches slowly, so their brain has time to get used to it.

Touches Can Mean Different Things

Just like how your favorite toy means something special to you, touches can mean different things to different people. Some people love being touched because it makes them feel happy, but others might feel like they’re being pulled into a big, confusing game, and that’s not always fun!
