Hiccups happen when your diaphragm, the muscle you use to breathe, suddenly contracts, and your voice box closes quickly. This makes a hic! sound. Sometimes people get hiccups after eating too fast or drinking something cold. You can stop them by holding your breath or drinking water in one go.
Examples
- Eating too fast can make your tummy feel full and cause hiccups.
- Drinking a cold soda quickly might give you the hic! sound.
- Sometimes, just being surprised by a loud noise stops hiccups.
