Why do some foods taste good and others taste horrible?

Some foods taste good because they have happy flavors and others taste bad because they have sad flavors.

Imagine your mouth is like a playground. When you eat something sweet, like candy, it's like playing on a slide, fun and exciting! That’s a happy flavor. But if you eat something sour, like lemon juice, it feels like falling off the swing, surprising and sometimes even a little yucky! That’s a sad flavor.

What Makes Flavors Happen

Foods have special helpers inside them called taste buds. These tiny helpers live on your tongue and tell you if something is sweet, salty, sour, bitter, or umami (which is like the “grown-up” flavor of foods like mushrooms).

When happy flavors meet your taste buds, they send a message to your brain that says, "This tastes good!" But when sad flavors meet your taste buds, they say, "This tastes bad!"

Sometimes, food has both happy and sad flavors, like chocolate with nuts. It's like having both a slide and a swing on the playground!
