How Light Bounces Off Metal
Imagine holding a spoon and tilting it until it shines brightly. That is exactly what happens with a coin. Metals like copper and nickel are very good at reflecting light. When sunlight hits the flat, polished side of a coin, the light bounces off in a single direction. This is called specular reflection. It is the same reason why your bedroom mirror shows your face clearly.
If the coin were rough or dirty, the light would scatter in many directions, creating a dull look. But because most coins are stamped to be smooth, they send a sharp beam of light toward you.
Why It Looks Like a Sparkle
A sparkle is not a property of the coin itself. It is a trick of timing. As you move or as the sun shifts, the angle changes. For a split second, the reflected light hits your eye, creating a bright flash. Then it moves away.
