The Memory Problem
The First Scribbles
People started scratching marks on clay or stone. These marks were not letters at first. They were pictures. A picture of a cow meant "cow." A picture of a cow with a stick meant "kill the cow."
Why It Matters
Writing lets us save thoughts outside our heads. It is like an external hard drive for the brain. We can read what we wrote yesterday. This helps us remember laws, stories, and math facts for a long time.
Examples
- A baker writes "5 loaves" on a tag so he remembers how many to give to the school.
- A farmer scratches a mark on a stone to remember he paid his tax.
- A child draws a house on paper to show her mom she wants to go home.
