Why Do Societies Develop Written Language?

Imagine trying to remember your whole grocery list in your head. If you forget the milk, you have to run back. Writing is like putting that list on a piece of paper so you do not have to remember it.

Long ago, people could only remember what they talked about. If a king said, "Give this man five bags of grain," the messenger had to remember that exact number. If he forgot, the man got the wrong amount.

People started scratching marks on clay or stone. These marks were not letters at first. They were pictures. A picture of a cow meant "cow." A picture of a cow with a stick meant "kill the cow."

Writing lets us save thoughts outside our heads. It is like an external hard drive for the brain. We can read what we wrote yesterday. This helps us remember laws, stories, and math facts for a long time.
