People snore because their throat gets blocked when they sleep. When someone goes to sleep, the muscles in their throat relax, like a sleepy cat falling into a nap. If the throat is wide open, air flows through easily and no one hears anything. But if it's narrow or partly closed, the air has to push its way through, making a loud noise, just like when you blow through a straw that’s almost closed.
Examples
- A dad falls asleep on the couch and starts snoring like a chainsaw.
- Your little brother snores so loudly he wakes up his sister in the middle of the night.
- Your friend’s dog snores every time it sleeps, just like its owner.
