Sometimes, when you look at a painting, it seems like the person is smiling, even if they’re not. This happens because artists use special tricks to make our brains think we're seeing movement or emotion. They might draw eyes that look happy, or add shadows in just the right place so it looks like the face is curved into a smile. It’s kind of like when you see a drawing of a person and suddenly they feel alive.
