Why Do Oil Paintings Darken With Age?

Imagine you are painting with thick white toothpaste that slowly turns into a creamy yellow color over time. This is exactly what happens to some of the oldest and most famous paintings! When artists like Rembrandt mixed special lead-based paints called lead white, they created bright, happy whites. However, those paint blobs were actually busy little bees working on the inside.

Why It Happens

The sunlight in the room acts like a tiny magnet. It pulls electrons around inside the lead particles. Over hundreds of years, this magnetic dance changes the shape of the atoms. The white color fades into a warm beige or even a rich brown chocolate color.

The Fix

Museums love to keep these old treasures safe. They use special lights that do not pull as hard on the atoms. Some experts also gently wash off the yellow sticky stuff on top called varnish. This reveals the true colors underneath, making the painting look almost new again.
