Why Do Mountains Have Different Shapes?

Mountains come in all sorts of shapes, some are pointy, some are rounded, and others look like big blocks stacked on top of each other.

Imagine building a tower with your blocks. If you stack them neatly one on top of the other, it might look like a straight wall. But if you push or pull the blocks in different directions, they might tilt or bend, just like how mountains change shape depending on what's happening underground.

How They're Built

Some mountains are made by pushing together big slabs of Earth’s crust, like when two giant puzzle pieces press into each other. This can make them look sharp and jagged, almost like broken glass.

What Happens After They’re Built

Over time, wind, rain, and snow can wear down the top of a mountain, just like how sandpaper smooths out rough wood. If a mountain is worn down a lot, it might look more rounded or even flat on top, like a pancake.

Sometimes mountains are shaped by molten rock that cools and hardens over time, imagine pouring hot chocolate into a mold and letting it cool to make a shape!
