Why do metals melt?

Metals melt when they get so hot that their tiny building blocks lose their grip on each other.

Imagine a metal is like a crowded dance floor. The atoms are the dancers. In a solid metal, these dancers hold hands tightly and stand in a neat, rigid pattern. They can wiggle a little, but they stay in place. This tight holding is called metallic bonding.

Now, imagine someone turns up the heat. Heat is just energy that makes everything jiggle. As the metal gets hotter, the atoms start to dance faster and faster. They bump into each other with more force.

Think of it like trying to hold hands while jumping up and down.

Letting Go

When the heat reaches a specific point called the melting point, the atoms are jiggling so wildly that they can no longer hold on. Their "hand-holding" breaks. The neat pattern falls apart. The atoms can now slide past one another freely.

This sliding movement is what we see as liquid metal. It flows like water because the atoms are no longer locked in place.
