Why do lungs work harder?

Lungs work harder when it’s like climbing stairs instead of walking on flat ground, your body needs more help to get oxygen where it needs to go.

Imagine you’re playing a game of tag, and you run as fast as you can. When you stop, you might feel like you need to take deep breaths because your body is saying, “Hey, I need more oxygen!” That’s what happens when lungs work harder, they're trying to bring in more air so your body can keep going.

Why does this happen?

Your lungs are like little pumps that help move air in and out of your body. When you’re doing something active, like running or jumping, your muscles need more energy. To get that energy, your body needs more oxygen, and that means your lungs have to work harder to bring it in.

It’s like when you're trying to blow up a balloon really big. The bigger the balloon gets, the harder you have to blow. Your lungs are doing something similar, they’re blowing up your body with air so you can keep playing!
