Why Do Languages Borrow Words From Others?

Imagine you are playing a game with friends, but you do not have the right toy. You borrow a toy from another friend to finish the game. Languages do the same thing with words.

When people from different places talk, they share new ideas. If one group has a special word for a food or a tool, the other group might want to use that word too. This is called borrowing.

We borrow words because sometimes we lack a word for something new. For example, when people in Europe first saw chocolate, they borrowed the word chocolate from indigenous languages. It was easier to borrow the word than to invent a new one.

Borrowing makes languages richer, like adding new colors to a crayon box.

Think of the word sushi. It is Japanese. Now many English speakers use it because they eat sushi. The word traveled across the ocean. This happens all the time with music, technology, and food.
