Why Do Icebergs Float on Water?

Have you ever wondered why icebergs stay on top of the ocean instead of sinking to the bottom? The answer lies in a special trick that water does when it gets cold.

When most things freeze, they shrink and get heavier. Water is different. When water turns into ice, the molecules arrange themselves in a loose, open pattern. This makes ice take up more space than the same amount of liquid water. Because it takes up more space but has the same weight, it becomes lighter than water.

The Water Trick

Think of a box full of toys. If you pack them tight, they fit close together. If you arrange them with lots of empty space between them, they take up more room. Ice is like the box with lots of empty space. This open structure makes ice less dense than water.

Staying Afloat

Because ice is lighter than water, it floats. Most of the iceberg is hidden underwater, but the top part stays above the surface. This happens because the density of ice is lower than the density of liquid water. It is a simple rule: lighter things float on heavier things. That is why icebergs do not sink.

Water is one of the very few things in nature that get bigger when they freeze. Most other things get smaller.
