How Your Voice Works
Your voice box, which is inside your throat, has little strings called vocal cords. When you talk or sing, these strings vibrate to make sound, kind of like when a rubber band snaps and makes a snap noise. The more you use them, the more they get tired.
Why You Lose It
If you shout at the top of your lungs during a game of tag or keep talking for a really long time, your vocal cords get swollen and sore, like when your legs feel wobbly after running around all day. When that happens, your voice gets quiet or disappears completely, just like how a tired toy might stop making noise.
But don’t worry! Your voice box is strong and will rest up again soon, just like you do after a long day of playing.
Examples
- A teacher loses their voice after a day of shouting at students.
- A singer can't perform because their voice is hoarse.
- A student becomes hoarse after talking non-stop during a long class.
