Humans need to sleep about eight hours a night because their bodies and minds need time to rest and get ready for the next day.
Imagine your brain is like a toy that you play with all day long. When you're playing, it gets tired. If you don’t give it a break, it can't work as well tomorrow. That’s why you go to bed, so your brain can rest and recharge, just like you rest after playing for a while.
Why eight hours?
Think of sleep as a special kind of nap that happens every night. Your body has a clock inside it, called the biological clock, that tells you when it's time to go to bed and when it's time to wake up. Most people need around eight hours for their brain and body to fully rest, like how your favorite toy needs time to reset after you play with it all day.
If you sleep less than that, it’s like not letting your toy rest enough, you might feel tired or grumpy the next day!
