Humans have belly buttons because we’re born with an umbilical cord that connects us to our mom while we’re growing in the womb. Once we're born, the cord is cut and falls off, leaving a little hole where it was attached. That's your belly button! Other mammals like dogs or cats don’t have this extra step, so they just don't have belly buttons.
Examples
- A baby has a belly button because its umbilical cord was cut after birth.
- Dogs don’t have belly buttons since their moms give birth without cutting cords.
- A human’s navel is like a tiny marker of how they were born.
